If you look back through the origins of D&D, It’s worth knowing that Gary Gygax never even finished high school. Now that said, I don’t particularly think most of it was done that way out of malice so much as just sheer laziness, but I also don’t think that makes it any better. It’s honestly one of my biggest complaints (if not my number one) about DND as a whole, and it has been evident through every iteration and edition of the game. 99% of it (meaning for certain anything that isn’t directly christian, and even quite a lot that is) is represented by just taking the name of something - be it a creature of folklore, a sacred relic, or even a part of everyday worship and just entirely throwing out any and all existing meanings or associations in order to use it as a pseudo-mystical name for something evil. As someone who has only even a passive interest in studying world mythologies and religions, the number of monsters curses, spells, and other content that crosses this sort of line astounds me. LIke, absolutely chock-a-block FILLED, from start to finish with misappropriated terms, legends, lore, and the like.
